Because the PVA is not dry yet, I can't show you my new Chinese unit, yet... So, while we're all eagerly waiting for them, let me show what I found in my digital camera, buried somewhere alongside old holidays pictures. I had completely forgotten them.Beware! This pictures are quite old, about 10 years... Yes, 10 years ago, this was my painting level:

This tercio was part of a project for the French Religion wars for Renaissance POW, long since aborted. The minis are now safe at my parents' house...

la colle seche sur ma nouvelle unite chinoise, donc vous devrez attendre un peu avant de la voir. En attendant, j'ai retrouve de vieilles photos d'il y a 10 ans sur un projet des guerres de religion pour Renaissance POW, que j'ai depuis longtemps abandonne. Tellement abandonne que j'avais oublie ces photos... C'est fou comme mon niveau de peinture s'est ameliore.

Almost done

Painting in an "industrial" way can be interesting, especially if the minis are easy to paint. Which is the case from those. I just finished the last highlights and they've been varnished. So, I think they should be ready tomorrow.

J'avais oublie a quel point peindre a la chaine pouvait valoir le coup parfois, surtout si les figs sont faciles a peindre. C'est le cas pour celles-ci car il ne me reste plus qu'a socler le tout. L'unite devrait etre prete demain normalement.

Reinforcements on the way

I've now officially painted more than 650 points for my FOG army. Shame on me I didn't want at first to spend more than required. Ah well. So I've almost finished a unit of mixed troups, from Museum minis, the one I started especially for my game against TAmsin. The only difference: it has 8 bases instead of 6. Next steps: the last highlights, then varnish then basing.

Voila, je me suis officiellement laisse emporter, car j'ei maintenant plus de 650 points FOG, alors que je ne voulais pas trop depenser... Voici donc une nouvelle unite mixte de chez Museum. Et c'est du lourd, car il y a 8 bases et non 6. Il ne me reste plus que quelques eclaircissements, le vernis et le soclage.

Leading the army

No real proper army can go to war without good generals. So today I'll show them, though they're not finished: I still need to glue the banners. All of them except the cariot are from Essex. The chariot is from Museum.

Pas de veritable armee sans bons generaux. Les voici donc rien que pour vos yeux, meme s'ils ne sont pas tout a fait termines, il reste les bannieres a coller. Enjoy.

Ha-Lin-Koru, a FOG batrep (again)

Yesterday was my last game from round 1 of the club competition, and I played against Tamsin. Because I follow her blog, I knew she would field a Sarmatian army, full of nasty superior impact cavalry, yurk. So, I reread my Chinese military, especially against the nomadic tribes from the North, and devised a plan accordingly:

Hier, j'ai joue ma derniere partie du round 1, contre Tamsin et ses Sarmates, bourree de cavaliers superieurs. beurk. Je me suis donc inspire de l'histoire chinoise et j'ai mis des pieux et des arbaletes a tout le monde. Bref de quoi faire une version 1415 avant l'heure, avec moi dans le role des Anglais... Pour info, voici ma compo:

- 1 Inspired leader, to get many moral bonus and to get the initiative

- 2 Troop commanders, to bolster my units in the fight

- my Tigers ( I just love them)

- the bulls and the dragons

- 1 big ( 8 bases) unit, yet unfinished

- my ravens, phoenixes, swallows and allied tribal cavalry.

Yep, that's it, only 8 units. But they had a special bonus: portable defenses, which work the same way as stakes... Very useful against cavalry, because they negate their bonuses and give me one...

We rolled for initiative and after many dice rolls, I got it again! We would fight in a developped area, not so good against cavalry armies. So here is the terrain: one small enclosed field on my left, a village and two more enclosed field on my right... but on Tamsin's side. Guess where I deployed... Right, in front of this features because she put her camp there.

Je n'ai certes que 8 unites, mais elles sont de qualite. J'obtiens l'initiative et choisis de combattre sur mon terrain... qui va etre plutot degage, avec quelques champs clos et un village en fond de table. Bof. Si je me deploie en bulle, je prevoie d'etre le plus aggressif possible pour empecher Tamsin de manoeuvrer, en attquant sur la droite

Though it may look like a bubble, I intend to be aggressive on my right, with my cavalry in reserve. What was Tam's plan? Well I don't know, but her shock troops were almost right in front of me.

And here we go. Tamsin moves first and get her Sarmatians in a good position to strike, or so she thinks... On my turn, I move my infantry forward. Can you see the trap unravelling?

Soon she's almost ready to strike. She can't wait because my shooting is bloody efficient and she started to lose bases...

J'avance donc tranquillement, et je commence a arroser les cavaliers de carreaux d'arbalete. Au dernier moment, mes hommes, surs d'eux, posent leurs pieux juste avant la charge... qui comme vous allez le voir, s'empale lamentablement...

And then... poof, my men well-lead, just plant their defense right in front of her cavalry... Yep, she's doomed. As doomed as a French Knight in 1415.

She charges... and here is the result:

Yep, they breaf off, with lots of losses...

I'm feeling so confident that I'm soon sending my infantry forward... to be charged by the last ~~fools~~ Sarmatians brave horsemen.

Tres rapidement, Tamsin recule les restes de sa cavalerie et j'en profite pour avancer et continuer a lui tirer dessus. Elle tente une derniere charge desesperee, mais rien ne fait et Tamsin finit par perdre l'armee, au sens moral et effectif...

This is the end of the Sarmatians army. But what happened on my wings? Well, on my left, my chariots just shot at some light horse and routed them, and on my right, a dimished light horse unit managed to fragment my light horse, Tamsin's only success...

Here is the final picture: where are the Sarmatians?

Aftermatch: with my portable defenses, I knew I couldn't lose badly against Tamsin's cavalry army, sorry Tamsin. The dice were with me, though I managed to get quite a lot of them during my shooting phase and the impact. Did I make any mistakes? I don't know, but I managed the game quite well. Sorry again Tamsin.

So, with this crushing victory, I'm sure to be on the next round. And good luck for Tamsin against Tim. I hope our game was instructive and your experience might serve you against his Han army.

Resultat des courses: victoire on ne peut plus decisive. Les des etaient avec moi, et les bonus aussi, bref, Tamsin n'a rien pu faire, a part me fragmenter un BG de cavalerie legere en fin de partie. Je remerci donc mon general en chef inspire, mes pieux et mes arbaletes. J'ai donc passe le premier round, et j'affronterai donc bientot de nouveaux adversaires. Quelque chose me dit qu'il y aura beaucoup de cataphractes et de chariots dans les prochains adversaires. Je vais donc affuter mes pieux, niark niark.

A good lesson- A FOG batrep

After my astonishing win, I met Tim and his Chinese army. Great, an historical battle. Tim is a good player so I know it will be a hard time, especially if facing lots of Chinese troups. I win the initiative again, and most terrain pieces are on my side: lots of open fields and one vineyard.

Apres ma belle victoire contre Gordon, j'affronte Tim et ses Chinois Han dans une bataille presque historique. Je remporte l'initiative et tous les terrains arrivent chez moi, ou presque. Bon, c'est du simple champ et un terrain pourri.

Then he deploys his army in a long line. Though he only has 8 BG, they're more numerous than mine ( I had the same compo as last time), and with some fortifications on his left. I decide to deploy around the vineyard, in a central position, with my skirmishers in it, and my light horses on the left, to slow him down.

Il se deploie en une longue ligne. Ses troupes sont moins nombreuses en termes d'unites mais il remplit la table. De mon cote, je vais m'appuyer sur le terrain et tenter d'attquer a droite. Ma cav legere tentera de le ralentir a gauche.

Then, the real battle began. I redeploy my infantry in a refused flank on my left, while I decide to strike on my right.

Do I feel confident, well, I don't know. He's moving fast, too fast for me. And he's soon on top of me... My light horses slow him down, but they're pinned and soon they'll leave the table, darn... I lost some points in an idiot way...

Bon, si a droite ca se passe plutot bien, malgre la perte de ma cavalerie, ma cavalerie legere a gauche est repoussee hors de table, youpi des points perdus betement. Et Tim continue de se rapprocher dangereusement. Les combats au centre sont furieux, mais mon unite des tortues craque et laisse un trou beant dans ma ligne...

Then we both charge in the center and my right flank... I hold in the center, but my cav on the right disappears too rapidly for my taste...

As you can see, the melee was bloody, but now I have two units against his mob... But in the center, the turtles broke, leaving a huge gap. You won't see many pics too blurry I'm afraid, but the dragons prove to be exceptional: outnumbered, attacked in front and the rear, they held for two rounds of combat!

Mention aux dragons, qui attaques de tous les cotes, vont tenir deux rounds de combat!

Halas, they finally die, and my army breaks... Though I destroyed 3 BG and fragmented another one. Tim was on the verge of collapse too... Damn.

Bon, il n'empeche, je finis par perdre, meme si j'ai detruit 3BG et fragmente un 4e. la double demo n'etait pas loin...

Worst units: yes 3 units were worthless: my light horses and my armoured cavalry.

So, what did I learn: Skirmishers can't even hold in crappy terrain, a thing I was used to in Art de la guerre. And then, I was too passive, I should have attacked with more troups on my right instead of waiting for Tim to come. Bah. Tonight, hopefully, I'll play my last game against Tamsin.

Lecon du jour: ne pas etre trop passif, sinon, je me fais avoir. Et les tirailleurs qui ne peuvent meme pas s'accrocher dans un terrain pourri, il faut s'y habituer... Ce soir, derniere partie contre Tamsin.

Dim-sun or Curry indian style? A FOG batrep

Hi everyone. At last, my first battlereport for FOG, in our internal comp. I was facing Gordon and his hordes of nellies and bowmen. On her blog, Tamsin simply stated that she was roughly beaten. So, what happened to me? Well, I got the initiative, so I chose a developped terrain, to place some enclosed field, which the nellies don't like, while my infantry didn't care about. And this is the terrain we played on:

Voici donc mon premier batrep pour FOg durant notre tournoi interne. J'affronte Gordon et ses hordes indiennes, avec archers et elephants. J'ai l'inititative, donc je choisis du terrain pourri pour canaliser ses babars , avec deux hamps clos sur ma gauche et un vaillage a droite:

For your information, I had:
- 1 Bg of chariots ( panzer if you like)
- 2 Bg of skirmishers
- 2 Bg of light horse
- 3 Bg of mixed troups
- 1 Bg of spearmen
- 1 Bg of cavalry

Two enclosed fields on my left, and one strange looking-but-surely-an-Indian-crappy-village-not-worthy-of-the-benefits-of-the-civilization, aka a dump. Well, without having any terrainon my side, I was still happy with it, simply because Gordon's nellies would be channelled, while I could go everywhere.

His army was deployed mainly on my left, while I opted for a more compact solution, in the center.

On Turn 1:

Gordon's right wing move forward ( wow that is fast), and one unit on his left enters Balamory, sorry, the crappy village. His troups on the center don't do anything (bad curry for lunch?).
I decide to move my cavalry on the right, while my infantry goes left, ready to strike . The chariots are in reserve.

Gordon s'est surtout masse sur ma gauche, et avance rapidement, mais ce n'est pas grave car mon infantry se redeploie, prete a frapper en direction des champs.

During the following turns, my plan seems to go perfectly well, as Gordon keeps advancing, and my infantry wings creeps towards his bowmen in the field. Meanwhile, my skirmishers try to catch their opponents, and my cavalry is still moving on the right. And then...

Mon plan se deroule sans accroc comme dirait mon heros Hannibal Smith. Je me prepare tranquillement, ma cavalerie va batifoler a droite, je temporise au centre et... je frappe a gauche sur sa pauvre infanterie avec mes tortues et mes taureaux. Et comme vous pouvez le voir, c'est une boucherie indienne que je vais pouvoir ouvrir :)

Oh look, they're finally moving...

I didn't want to wait for the oncoming onslaught, so.... Chargeeeeee! First the turtles then the bulls raced towards the bowmen, and...

After a few exchange of hallberds and swords, ok, mostly hallberds in their face, the bowmen flee and disrupt/ fragment everything in their path...

Rien ne resiste a mon infanterie...

Weren't there some more Indian troups there before, ark ark...

Gordon knows the end is coming, so he unleashes hell, well his nellies, and tries to attack my cavalry on his left flank...

Gordon tente des charges pour me briser, avec ses elepahnts et sa cavalerie, mais non seulement je tiens, mais en plus je gagne!

Brace yourselves lads!

No need to brace ourselves guys, we're winning!

But it was too late. My units held their ground and the game was over, time was up. Gordon had lost 12 points out of 13 and I lost... 2 points. My chariots were fragmented against... bloody bowmen.

So, for my first game ever of FOG, I didn't do badly. I didn't fell into his trap in the center, and in fact I used it to trash his infantry. The Chinese infantry is bloddy good, very resilient and efficient in melee. But I still need to learn how to use correctly the skirmishers in these rules.

Bref, Gordon a perdu 12 points sur 13 et moi, seulement 2... Mes putians de chariots qui se font fait avoir par des putains de mangeurs de curry armes d'arcs. Enfin, pour ma premiere partie de FOG, je suis content, car je ne crois pas avoir fait d'erreurs.

Unit of the match: the Tigers: outnumbered almost 3-1, they held and routed one unit and killed a general. Well done!

Worst unit: my chariots! they didn't do anything and got fragged by bowmen though they were better...

you-houuu, no Wu-Hu

Hello everyone. My daughter's fine now, so I can now be back on the blogging work. Though she was sick , I was still able to paint, so today I present you my new unit, the light horse from the nomadic tribe of the creamy sheep. Why the creamy sheep? Well, those guys were famous as horse bowmen, and they were all ridin over creamy sheep's wool saddles, so it was the name they were given. Ok, not so warlike, but never say that in front of them, you'll regret it ;) This time, the minis are from Old Glory. I must say I like them a lot. Though they only have three different rider poses, there were 6 different horses, so I think I managed to get a lot of different poses alltogether. To follow, more troups, of course, but fisrt the long awaited batreps, sorry about that.

Bon, ma fille va mieux, donc me voici de retour. J'ai quand meme pu continuer a peindre tranquillement, et voici donc les archers a cheval de la tribu nomade du mouton cremeux. Ok, c'est un nom a priori pourave, mais ne vous y fiez pas. Ceux qui se moquaient d'eux ont mal termine. Ce nom leur vient simplement de leur selle, faite de laine de mouton, c'est tout. Les figs viennent de chez Old Glory, et franchement, c'est du tout bon, car il y avait trois poses differentes de cavaliers, et surtout six poses differentes de chevaux. Bref, de la bonne variete quoi. A suivre, d'autres troupes, et surtout mes rapports de bataille.

Medic! and some horses

Hi everyone. Well, I think my week-end will be somewhat busy doing something else: My daughter is sick, so first I've had to postpone my game against Tamsin, and then I think my painting speed will be slowed down. Oh well, my sweet and loving daughter first.

Then, I still managed to have enough spare time to prep another unit for my Chinese army: nomadic light horses, but this time fromn Old Glory.

Bon, week-end pertirbe, car ma fille est malade. Du coup, j'ai du annuler ma partie contre Tamsin et ses Sarmates, pour etre sur de bien m'occuper de ma pupuce adoree... Mais ce n'est que partie remise. En attendant, j'ai pu grapiller siffasemment de temps pour preparer une unite de cav legere des steppes, provenant de chez Old Glory.

The Glorious Phoenixes

At last, they're done. I feel a bit proud of them. But before I show you the results, first the last WIP pictures:

- first the banners: I used the calligraphied version of the Phoenix Character (male version). I painted them on a paper, over which I had first put a lyer of Dheneb Stone.The characters are painted in black. Then, the banner were cut and fitted to poles. Easy, isn't it?

And here are now the Phoenixes, arrayed for battle. What a sight!

Voila, mes chariots lourds sont termines. Comme vous pouvez le voir, les bannieres sont attachees aux hampes.

Pour faire les bannieres, pas complique, j'ai fait le tout en free-hand. J'ai peint sur fond de Dheneb Stone le caractere chinois du phenix male ( car il existe une version femelle) utilise en calligraphie. Puis decoupage, collage, et eclaircissement final en blanc, et voilou.

Chariot WIP log - part 4

Almsot there people, almost there. I've done the last highlights, and then varnished them. And once dry, I did a wash of Vallejo Tan Earth on the base. Next, the banners and the basing, and voila!

Bon, c'est pratiquement fini. J'ai passe les dernieres touches peintures, puis verni le tout. Une fois sec, j'ai passe un lavis de Terre Mat de chez Vallejo sur les socles. A suivre, les bannieres et le flocage.

Now, we're onto some serious business: I've painted the crew, well at least the first layers, and continued on the chariots. I've taken some pictures to show you the colours I used. As you can see, I'm almsot finished.

Chariot WIP log - part 2

The sand I glued on the bases is dry, and so I started painting, beginning with the horses. I went with two base colours: one light ( Khemri Brown)and one dark brown ( scorched brown).
LE sable sur les bases a seche, donc je passe a la peinture proprement dite, avec deux bases, une en Khemri Brown l'autre en Scorched Brown.

Then I painted the minis' uniform and the chariots in Chaos Black. And once the paint on the horses was dry, generous wash of Badab Black.
Puis peinture genereuse de noir sur les figs et lesl chariots. Ajoutons ensuite un beau lavis de Badab Black.

After that, here come the highlights on the horses/ Puis les eclaircissements:
- For the light horses: Khemri Brown then Kommando Khaki

- for the Brown horses, well, I did two different shades / deux robes diffentes pour les chevaux:
- scorched brown and then Dark Flesh
- scorched Brown and Bestial Brown.

Then the banner poles were painted in Mechrite Red. Les hampes ont recu du Mechrite Red.

Sorry people, slightly out of topic, but I've just received my TOEFL results. Out of 120 points ( internet based test), I've got:

- 30/30 in reading ( yeah man)
- 27/30 in listening ( Yeahhhh)
- 26/30 in speaking ( what the heck?)
- 28/30 in writing ( come on!!!!!)

Am I good or what? Ok, now I can fairly assume I'm proficient in English, and Ican prouve it. See ya!

Completement hors sujet, mais je viens juste de recevoir mes resultats du TOEFL, examen que je passe il y a peu. Comme vous pouvez le voir ci-dessus, je pense avoir bien assure! Comment je vais me la peter grave.

Chariot WIP log - part 1-

Ok, time to be a bit serious. My game is coming in a few days, so I must keep painting. This time, I'll try a different approach, because I'll paint a whole unit in one time, instead of doing parts of them. So, during the next few days, I'll present you the progress I made. I've started with the preps for my unit of heavy chariots. For me, A Chinese army without any chariots is not a propoer Chinese army. So, my unit will have 4 bases of chariots. As you can see, I've glued everything except the figures, and then PVAed the bases and added sand. They'll dry during the night. Oh, I did a bit of conversion, very light: I added two banner poles to each chariots. They come from my box of North Star wire spears. Good night, folks.

Bon, c'est pas tout de s'amuser, mais mon armee chinoise doit avancer. Je vais m'y prendre autrement, puisque cette fois, je vais peindre une unite d'un seul coup. Ce seront des chariots lourds, car pour moi, une armee chinoise sans chariots n'est pas une armee chinoise. Donc au menu de la soiree, ebarbage, montage, et sablage avec PVA. J'attends que ca seche pour continuer. et j'en ai profite pour ajouter des hampes pour bannieres a chaque chariot. Ces hampes viennent de ma boite de lances North Star. Bonne nuit a vous.

Good news on the painting front?

Well, I should say 2012 could be a very good year for me, at least on the painting/gaming front. I learned my local would be hosting an other internal comp, with FOG-Renaissance. Couldn't that be a better idea, could it? I was about to start painting one myself, so, up the motivation to climb the lead hill ( no moutain for me) ;P Expect some TYW stuff quite soon.

2012 pourrait etre une bonne annee pour moi sur le front du jeu et de la peinture, car j'ai appris que mon club allait lancer un tournoi interne de Fog- renaissance. Et ca tombe bien car je dois peindre une armee pour cette regle. Je vais donc chausser mes chaussures de randonnee pour grimper la colline de plomb. Attendez-vous donc a voir de la guerre de trente ans bientot les amis.

While searching for something to do...

Yesterday, while I was looking at my lead pile, I stumbled upon a blister of Numidian Skirmishers from Corvus Belli and a couple from Eureka. These minis belong to my friend Ludo, so I quickly painted them for him. The Eureka are very tall and slim. If you are interested, they're more in the 20mm range, and the alloy is very britle, so beware.

Tandis que je cherchais de quoi peindre dans ma colline de plomb, ben oui, je n'ai pas la place d'avoir une montagne, je suis tombe sur ces figs de chez Corvus et Eureka, representant des frondeurs, Numides et hellensitiques. Hop, je les ai peintes dans la foulee pour mon pote Ludo. Les figs Eureka sont pas mal, mais attention, elles sont tres grandes, plutot dans les 20mm, et sont fragiles, donc soyez prevenus.

Allez, je me remets a mes Chinois.

Some explanations... and an apology

Some of you have thanked me for the background info I provided about the last unt I painted, the Turtles (see previous post). I had developped a background for this particular unit, with some battle record. The thing is... It was only my imagination at work. Indeed, I don't know if there was nay unit called the turtles, and if there was a battle at the Red River. The problem comes from the Chinese sources. From what I gathered, from second hand I don't read ancient Chinese, most of what we know about the period is quite bureaucracy-centered. So we have names, numbers, sometimes names of battles, but that's it.

But, to my defense, this is what we know for sure:

- Chinese units had names,

- Rewarding units after a battle, even with a new flag, or a slight change in name, was a comman practice.

So, with this scarce info at hand, I wrote a small background for my new unit...

I hope you don't mind fellow reader, but I felt compelled to do it.

Certains d'entre vous ont apprecie l'historique de ma derniere unite peinte, les tortues. Cependant, il ne s'agissait que du fruit de mon imagination: je ne sais pas si il y avait une unite appelee les tortues, ni s'il y eut une bataille de la Riviere Rouge... Le probleme vient des sources chinoises. De ce que j'ai pu obtenir, de seconde main malheureusement ( je ne parle pas chinois), les sources etaient tres orientees vers le fonctionnement de la bureaucratie. Donc nous avons des noms, des chiffres, mais peu de compte-rendu de bataille. Ce dont nous sommes a peu pres surs:

- les unites chinoises avaient des noms

- la pratique des recompenses apres une bataille etait monnaie courante, avec octroi de nouveaux drapeaux, ou bien petit changement de nom.

A partir de la, j'ai elabore un historique plausible pour cette unite tres vraisemblablement fictive.

J'espere ne pas vous avoir "froisses", mais je me sentais oblige de m'excuser.

The faithful turtles

Beware mortals! The turtles are ready to wage war in the name of the emperor! This is far from being a joke. Though in our occidental cultures, having a unit baptized as the turtles could be laughable, this is not the case in the Chinese cosmoslogy. Turtles are associated with stability, power... very positive qualities. So, in fact, it's a really good name for them.

You'll see a flag bearing the symbol of the phoenix. Well, for the story, the turtles fought alongside the Elite Phoenix at the battle of the Red River, buying enough time by standing against hordes of ennemies to allow the phoenix to charge in the flank of the ennemy army, thus winning the day. In recognition, the Emperor himself gave the turtle this second flag.

Quelle idee de baptiser une unite les "tortues fideles". Franchement, hein? Ben justement. Dans la cosmoslogie chinoise, les tortues ont des qualites extremement positives, notamment la puissance, la stabilite, bref que des choses ideales pour une unite militaire. Et toc! Les tortues se sont battues aux cotes de l'unite d'elite des phenix, contenant des hordes d'ennemis suffisamment longtemps pour permettre a ces derniers de charger les ennemis dans le flanc. En recompense, l'empereur lui-meme leur remit ce drapeau.

As I told you a couple of days ago, I've received a parcel from Museum Miniatures. The minis looked ok to me, so I was wondering if I should order more while the sales were still going on. Needless to say I'm weak, so I ordered enough troups to paint more options. And I received the parcel today, while sipping a cup of coffee:

Falling behind Tamsin this easily left me with a bitter taste in my mouth ( na kidding). But because I already had prepped a new unit, I could start earlier than expected, and so here is the first part.

All the references come from the Essex Han range. To be honest, I don't really like the shield bearers, but then, I don't have anything else at the moment, so they'll do. I went for another Brown unit, but with a different shade of Brown, and I think tis one looks better than the one used on the skirmishers.

Bon, Tamsin m'a bien depasse, et non, je ne suis pas amer, ni decu par cette defaite annoncee dans cette competition de peinture d'armee. Mais cela m'a permis de rester toujours plus motive pour peindre et finir rapidenent. Voici donc le dbut de ma nouvelle unite. Toutes les references utilisees sont de la reference Han de chez Essex, et pour etre honnete, je n'aime pas leurs porteurs de boucliers. Mais bon. Et j'ai retente une experience sur le marron, mais avec d'autres couleurs, et je trouve qu'il ressort mieux que sur mes tirailleurs.

Hello everyone. I hope the snow wasn't too much of a trouble for you this week-end. Warm and cosy at home, I could manage to do some more painting done, and prepping the other unit. But today , my new unit is on parade: the leaping Tigers:

As I told you, this is a unit of offensive spearmen, so they had to get an "offensive" name. And because I had a Tiger banner from LBMS, well, what better name than tis one? This unit might be one of my major assets ( yes Tamsin, assets). And though Tamsin seems to be ahead of me in terms of painting, I 'm not that far behind now. Ok, I just checked your blog, I'm really falling behind. Darn.

Salut a tous. Deja, desole pour les accents, et autres subtilites de la langue francaise, mais j'ai change de clavier, et je suis loin de connaitre les raccourcis appropries pour basculer en Francais. Bref, j'espere que la neige ne vous aura pas trop embete ce week-end. De mon cote, bien au chaud, j'ai termine cette nouvelle unite, et commence une autre, qui va bientot parader sous vos. En attendant donc, voici les Tigres bondissants, nom qui leur va a ravir je pense, car c'est une unite d'attaque, qui sera un de mes nombreux atouts dans cette league interne. Et si vous avez bien suivis mon blog, ce dont je ne doute pas, cette unite me remet en course face a Tamsin, bien que je sois quand meme bien en retard.

Before I started painting this army, I read a bit about Chinese history during the Warring States Era. And I must say the Qin kingdom was the one who was the most appealing. Though they always look interesting in any army lists you can find, that wasn't what I was looking for. I wanted something out of the ordinary. The Qin had the answer: Promotion in the army and the nobility was given according to the number of ennemy heads you could chop off and then produce in front of your superiors. Now that is what I call a motivation. So, a simple yet competent farmer-soldier could become an officer simply because he had more trophies than the others... This background was so tempting, I wanted my offensive spearmen to reflect this habit. And indeed you can see them running forward to get to grips with the ennemy. I still have two more bases to do, and this unit will be ready. Oh, BTW, I made an other order at Museum to get more Chinese troops ^^

L'armée Qin est toujours très tentante à jouer d'après les listes d'armée. Cependant, avant de commencer à la peindre, je m'étais un peu renseigné sur l'histoire de la période des royaumes combattants. Je voulais une armée qui sorte de l'ordinaire. Bon ok, ce seront des Qin, mais ce qui m'a décidé provient simplement de leurs pratiques sur le champ de bataille: le système de promotion se faisait en fonction du nombre de têtes qu'ils pouvaient rapporter à leurs supérieurs. Ainsi, un simple paysan dans l'armée pouvait, en se débrouillant bien, devenir officier grâce à son nombre de trophées accumulés. C'est ce que j'appelle de la motivation ou je ne m'y connais pas. Bref, c'était ce que je recherchais. Et du coup, j'ai essayé, pour cette unité de lanciers, de reproduire cette attitude de l'armée Qin, prompte à aller au combat pour rapporter des têtes. Puisse cette pratique faire peur à mes adversaires ^^

Ach Teufel! No, TOEFL

Not much painting yesterday, simply because today I'm passing the TOEFL, a certifiacte to see if I'm proficient enough in English... It'll be the internet version, with a final mark which could be up to 120 points. This far I managed to get 110 points. Which is good, my main weakness being the speaking test, of course. But then, I'm a slow speaker, and having only 60 seconds to answer is short...

Pas vraiment de peinture hier, car je vais passer aujourd'hui le TOEFl, qui est un diplôme prouvant notre capacité à s'exprimer et comprendre la langue de Shakespeare. Ce sera la version internet, avec un total de 120 points. Jusqu'à présent j'ai pu obtenir un score de 110, ce qui est très bon. Ma faiblesse est à l'oral. En fait, on doit répondre à des questions en moins de 60 s, et comme je suis plutôt lent à m'exprimer, c'est short, très short. Mais bon, je ne désespère pas.

Here we go again. Gosh I'm on fire. The spearmen are coming along nicely and they should be done quite soon. Gordon told me he could lend me some Chinese troops in case I haven't finished the painting. But I'm a bit superstitious about that. He could have put a spell on them to make me lose ^^ Anyway, two more bases done yesterday evening.
And to answer the question Firemonkeyboy asked about the colours: for the purple, I used Vallejo 811 Blue Violet, then Vallejo (Games color) Purple Ink G18, followed but a highlight in Vallejo811. Simple isn't it?

Bon, je continue ma peinture, tout en gardant le rythme. Gordon m'a dit qu'il pouvait me prêter des troupes chinoises en attendant le reste de la peinture. Mais comme tout bon wargamer, je suis superstitieux. Il pourrait les avoir maraboutées pour que je perde contre lui ^^. Donc je file, je file à mes pinceaux.

My first game in the comp is scheduled for mid-February. So I'd better be ready for the challenge, because I'll play against Gordon and his mighty Indian elephants... Fortunately for me, I should have enough crossbows to make him think twice before charging. But I also have a little nasty surprise for him, and for Tamsin and Tim: The Chinese can have one of the most interesting unit in FOG: Armoured drilled offensive spearmen... They can fight effectively against everything, in the open and in the terrain. Niarkkkkk. It's a big unit, 8 bases, so today you'll see the first 2, while the rest is on my painting desk.

Ma première partie de FOG se rapproche, prévue pour mi-février. J'affronterai alors Gordon et sa horde de babars sanguinolents. Je pense avoir assez d'arbalètes pour le faire réfléchir à deux fois avant de me charger. J'ai également une jolie petite surprise pour mes adversaires. Il paraît que c'est une des meilleures unités dispos: des offensive spearmen, armoured, drilled. ils sont à l'aise partout, et en plus j'ai une grosse unité de 8 bases. Cela promet ;) Voici donc les deux premières, le reste est encore en peinture.

Discovery of Museum

I just received my small order from Museum miniatures. I'll remind you that up until tomorrow, they're having a 25% sale. I had ordered some stuff to complete my FOG-R army (mainly for the camp), and a general in a chariot (and umbrella), for my Chinese. The sculpts seem to be okay. Hmm, maybe an other order just before the end of the month?

Je viens de recevoir ma petite commande Museum Miniatures, qui je le rappelle, fait encore ses soldes jusqu'à demain. Comme vous pouvez le voir, je n'ai pas pris grnad-chose, histoire de tester. Il me fallait deux-trois trucs pour faire mon bagage FOG-R et de quoi faire un général chinois, dans un chariot et avec un parasol. La gravure est satisfaisante, je me demande si je ne vais pas faire un ultime krakaje avant demain.

happy 100th and the rats

First of all, this is my 100th post on this blog, hurray for me! Not bad considering I started it last may. So, to celebrate, let me present you the sneaky rats, my new complted skirmisher unit. The brown colour on their vest doesn't seem to be clealry visible, but I've painted three layers on them, trust me! 6 BG down, 4 more to go, and the leaders...

Still pursuing the quest of having my army finished before the comp. I started yesterday my second unit of skirmishers, this time composed of proper crossbowmen. I had to mix the references to have enough men to put on the bases but then, having different looking minis on a skirmish base doesn't bother me.

Mon objectif à atteindre, terminer mon armée avant le début du tournoi se poursuit. Cette fois-ci, j'ai pu commencer une nouvelle unité de tirailleurs, équipés correctement d'arbalètes. N'ayant pas suffisamment de figs pour avoir un ensemble homogène, j'ai dû mixer. Pas grave, car ça ne me dérange pas.

Such a lovely name for my new unit of cavalry don't you think? I have now 4 bases of heavy cavalry, armed with crossbows and hallberds. They feel very confident in their victory and are always ready to hunt down and strike their prey, whichever it might be. So, with this unit, I have painted half of my battlegroups... Yeah, that's right, I still have 5 more to do, and they're more numerous than the first 5. Darn. I can't relax now, though I feel I'd like to paint some TYW stuff, or some Romans...

Quel doux petit nom pour ma toute nouvelle unité, vous ne trouvez pas? Les corbeaux assoifés de sang... Toujours sûrs de la victoire, armés de leurs arbalètes et de leurs hallebardes, ils ne craignent personne, et sont prêts à fondre sur quiconque leur barre le chemin. Avec cette unité, j'ai donc peint la moitié de mes battlegroups. Mais les 5 restants sont plus imposants, globalement. Donc, bon, je suis loin d'en avoir peint la moitié... Et je commence vraiment à avoir envie de peindre du Romain (encore) ou de la guerre de Trente ans.

My "elite" cavalry

A Qin army without cavalry wouldn't be a real Qin army. So I've started a new unit of mounted troups. I know, They're dressed in red, but this time I've opted for a darker red colour. I've mixed two references: heavy cavalry with hallberds znd heavy cavalry with crossbows. If I want to play a simple heavy cavalry unit, they'll do because most of them have shock weapons. Do I want shooty cavalry? Well, They have some crossbows. He he.

Une armée Qin digne de ce nom se doit d'avoir de la cavalerie lourde. Voici donc le début de ma fière cavalerie. Certes, ils sont eux aussi vêtus de rouge, mais j'ai choisi des tons plus sombres. J'en ai également profité pour mixer deux références: avec arbalètes et avec hallebardes. De cette manière, je fais d'une pierre deux coups: je veux de la simple cavalerie lourde? Pas de problème, on voit qu'ils sont équipés pour le choc. Je veux des tireurs? Pas de, problème là encore, on voit des arbalètes.

The Proud Dragons

And Voila! Another battlegroup is finished, based and flocked. In the Chinese calendar, we're about to enter the year of the dragon, and this creature was also a symbol of power. So it might be logical to call the Guards the Dragons. One comment advised me to use a black pen to hide the white on the flags; I forgot to do it this time, but be sure I'll do it next time. I really enjoyed painting this unit. The Essex miniatures are really easy to paint. Next, some cavalry.

Et voilà. Une nouvelle unité est maintenant terminée. Il s'agit des gardes de l'empereur. Je les ai appelés les dragons fiers ( ou orgueilleux diront certains), pour deux raisons: nous allons entrer dans l'année du dragon, et le dragon était également une créature associée à la puissance, au courage... Bref, le choix paraît logique à mes yeux. J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à peindre cette unité, les Essex sont vraiment sympas à peindre. A suivre, de la cavalerie.

Presenting the Guards

Clock's ticking, and the start of the competition is almost upon me. Fortunately (?), my wife is stuck at work at the moment, so I can't go to club. Dear me, I'm forced to paint at home... Ho, the infamy of it all. Erm. I managed yesterday evening to paint the first part of the guards unit. Because I'm painting Qin, they're dressed in black and bronze armor.

Le début du tournoi interne se rapproche et mon armée est encore loin d'être terminée. Heureusement pour moi (?), ma femme est submergée par le boulot et du coup je suis coincé à la maison, ne pouvant aller au club. Alors je peins, je peins, et du coup, j'ai terminé le premier tiers de ma nouvelle unité, les gardes. Comme je peins des Qin, la couleur impériale était le noir, donc ils seront vêtus de noir, avec de belles armures de bronze.

The raging bulls

One of the good things being unemployed (and a homedad) is that you can paint almost whenever you want. So, while my wife was taking care of my daughter, I managed to finish my third unit, now called the raging bulls, simply because they wear red.

The flag is from Little Big men. Very tricky to cut and glue, but rather nice. Now, onto the fourth battlegroup, the Guards.

Etre au chômage et père au foyer peut avoir des avantages, à commencer par pouvoir presque quand je le veux. Du coup, madame s'occupant de ma fille, j'ai pu terminer ma troisième unité, baptisée les taureaux enragés, tout simplement parce qu'ils portent du rouge. Le drapeau est un LittleBig Men, pas très facile à découper et coller, mais il donne une belle impression au final. A venir, les gardes.

Of Hallberds and crossbows

My journey to China is still going well, with a lot of painting being done. Today, I can proudly present the second 2/3 of my unit:

I've already started the last part but then, I'll have to flock them and add a nice Chinese flag. Painting under pressure to get an army done for a comp/ big deadline is quite stimulating, and I think I'll try to keep that in mind for my next projects. Ta-ta.

Voici donc la deuxième partie de mon unité chinoise. J'avoue que peindre pour ce tounoi interne, même si je vais me faire écraser comme une mouche rencontrant la queue d'une belle Normande, est assez stimulant, et peindre sous pression me plaît bien. A très bientôt pour la suite, avec une unité complète et un joli drapeau.

A small change of plans

Hello everyone. Do you remember I intended to paint a Thirty Years war army for FOG-Renaissance? At first, I wanted an Imperial army,and for a simple reason: it was a jack of all trades army.

But then, I learned that at least three (maybe four) people at my club were already playing Imperials, or wanted to paint one. Well, to be honest, if I added mine, It would be a bit boring. So, I've decided to change my allegiance, and paint a French Army! Yay! Of course, because I want something a bit historical, it'll be painted following the order of battle from Rocroi in 1643.

It's one of the most famous French victory, and the French army is much more funny to play. It's a win or lose army, but with panache. Imperials or Spanish, be warned!

Salut à tous. Il y a peu je vous avais annoncé comme projet 2012 la peinture d'une armée impériale pour la guerre de trente ans. Période que j'affectionne particulièrement. Cependant, j'ai appris qu'au moins 3 joueurs de mon club jouaient ou comptaient jouer des Impériaux. Leur avantage est que la liste impériale permet d'avoir de tout. Du coup, j'ai décidé de changer mon fusil d'épaule, pardon, mon mousquet, et de faire une armée française. Bien sûr vousme connaissez, je veux faire un minimum historique, et j'ai donc choisi de suivre l'ordre de bataille de la bataille de Rocroi en 1643, grande victoire française contre les Espagnols (bouh mon coeur à moitié ibère pleure à cette mention). A FOG-Renaissance, l'armée française me paraît fun à jouer. C'est la victoire ou la défaite, mais avec panache, que diable. A bientôt pour la suite des aventures.

"Heavy" Chinese on the way

Though I know I'll be a bit distracted bit the Sci-fi project, I'm still painting my Chinese. And I finished yesterday the first 6 minis of my third battlegroup:

It's a mixed unit with a front rank of armoured Halleberdiers, and a rear rank of crossbowmen. They might be deadly, I don't know.

Même si je risque d'être distrait par la SF, je continue tout de même mon armée chinoise, et voici aujourd'hui les 6 premières figs de ma nouvelle unité. Il s'agit d'une troupe mixte, composée d'hallebardiers en armure, et d'un second rang d'arbalétriers. J'espère qu'ils seront efficaces, c'est tout ce que je demande.

Yesterday evening, I managed to get to my club, and though there weren't too many people, there was a game of Tomorrow's War, with Tamsin and Simon. They were playing, along with another fellow, Michael I think, a simple scenario: a group of marines had to rescue two pilots, while groups of local rebels tried to ambush them. It was fast, brutal and bloody. One of the rebel leader was shot 4 times, and was still breathing... Imagine the laughs. And because the games are fast and short, they asked me if i wanted to play again. Well of course, who am I to refuse such a good game. I played the marines, while Simon took the rebel forces, and Tamsin umpired. Well, it was a blood bath... for the rebels anyway. I managed to get an ennemy squad in a crossfire... And then a sniper appeared... on my side! Yay! When the rebels heard the distinctive sound of the sniper rifle, they just decided to... run away...

So, why Should Tamsin and Simon be damned? Because now I want to play Sci-fi again, and I have some painted minis at hand here in London. The rest is at my parent's home, but since they're coming to visit us next week... Damned, I'm weak, another project for 2012.

Je suis d'une faiblesse, c'est affligeant. Hier soir, j'ai réussi à dégager un peu de temps pour passer au club, et j'y ai croisé Tamsin , Simon et Michael jouant à Tomorrow's war. Le scénario était relativement simple, un groupe de marines devait récupérer des pilotes planqués dans un bâtiment, tandis qu'une force de rebelles les attendaient en embuscade. La partie était rapide, brutale, sanglante, et drôle, un des leaders rebelles ayant été atteint 4 fois, mais se relevant toujours... Puis on me propose d'y jouer, après tout, c'est un jeu rapide. Jej prends les marines, et j'avoue m'être beaucoup amusé. Et lorsque, par un coup du sort, un sniper apparaît à mes côtés, les rebelles, après avoir entendu le son caractéristique de son fusil Gauss Mk IV, ont décidé de fuir dans les collines. Du coup, j'ai à nouveau envie d'y jouer, et ça tombe bien car j'avais mes figs avec moi à Londres. Il m'en rsete un paquest chez mes parents, mais comme ils viennent nous rendre visite la semaine prochaine... Hop, un nouveau projet pour 2012!

The brave swallows

Nothing too fancy today, I just finished painting/varnishing and basing my second battlegroup yesterday evening. So today I can proudly present you the brave swallows. They're regular mounted scouts, and might be great at flanking and shooting down anything in their path. Or so I think, of course. for this army, I inted to do some experiments, and so I started with the horses, for which I changed my method and colours.

Voici donc aujourd'hui les hirondelles courageuses. Ce sont des cavaliers légers, très habiles avec un arc. Bref, ils seront parfaits pour harceler l'adversaire sur un champ de bataille. Même si j'ai eu un peu de mal à les peindre, j'ai bien apprécié de pouvoir tester des combinaisons de couleurs pour les chevaux.

My first Chinese scouts

Because a Chinese army could muster ten of thousands of troops, the generals had to rely on the scouts, preferably mounted, to the front or the flank. So yesterday I finished two of the four bases of regular light horse. Sorry for the lighting but I can't always decide where I take the pictures.

I quite like them, but the thing is I received an army list, made by a friend (thanks Gilles), and, as you can see below, there are no bow skirmishers...

Car comme vous le voyez, j'ai récupéré une liste (merci Gilles) et il faut 6 socles. Le truc, il n'y a pas un seul archer, que des arbalétriers, damned. Bon, pas grave, j'en ferai un proxy, du moment qu'elles sont agréables à regarder. Du coup, j'ai du boulot pour peindre tout ça. Hop, je prends mes pinceaux et mes baguettes.

Hello everyone. Since I was more than reasonable during the festivities, I was able to start painting my chinese army. So today I present you a test base of skirmishers. The minis are from Essex (those bought at Warfare). The thing is, I have to play them with FOG, but I don't have the rules nor the list, so I hope they will fit. I've planned three more of them, because I'll need them for the Chinese army I wanted to play with Art de la guerre. What do you think?

Salut à tous. J'ai été très raisonnable (bien forcé) durant les fêtes et du coup j'ai pu peindre un peu et commencer mon armée chinoise pour le tournoi FOG. Il s'agit ici d'une plaquette test de tirailleurs. Le truc est que je ne sais pas si ils sont valides ou pas car je n'ai pas la liste (pas encore). J'en ai prévu 3 autres bases, car j'en aurai besoin pour mon armée Art de la guerre. Keszenpensez?

A year in review

First of all, I wish you well for the coming year. Then, like many other bloggers, I did some stats about my hobby and blogging activity. I added those from my former blog which I stopped in may. So, here are the results

I published 117 posts which is no too bad, considering my moving in london, my illness in January...

Now to real and proper stats:

I painted a whole 15mm Napoleonic Anglo-Allied army for a friend: 255 foot, 86 horsemen and 4 guns.

Then I painted lots of Romans for another friend: 111 foot, 33 horsemen plus a donkey and two tents.

And because I like painting for myself, a Carthaginian army for Art de la guerre: 105 foot, 19 horsemen and an elephant.
So, to complete this review, I painted more than 471 footmen and 138 horsemen. It represent a grand total of 755 Marius ( the basic unit of painted minis). it's far from bad though I could have done better. Well happy new year to you all my fellow readers.

Malgré ma "maladie" en janvier et mon déménagement sur Londres, j'ai pas mal peint. je ne vous fait pas le détail, il est visible. Tout de même, 755 marius, c'est pas mal. Pas de quoi être fier, mais quand même. A bientôt pour 2012 et une année encore très chargée niveau peinture.

I told you yesterday I would be busy next year. And indeed I'll be. First, I've entered a FOG competition in my club. Yes, you heard me correctly. I'll play FOG though I don't like the Ant/med version. I just want to play and meet more people here in London, so it's a perfect excuse to paint a new army, my Qin Chinese I bought from Essex. Fortunately, the FOG army will compatible with an Art de la guerre army, so, honour is safe:

Then, maybe at the same time, I'll start another project: an Imperial army from the Thirty Years War for FOG renaissance. I've received the minis from Old Glory at Christmas (thanks honey).

Bon, l'année à venir va être chargée. Tout d'abord, histoire de continuer à m'intégrer, je vais participer à un tournoi interne de FOG dans mon club. Je sais, je n'aime pas FOG, mais je veux m'amuser. Je vais donc en profiter pour peindre une armée Qin, qui sera compatible avec une version Art de la Guerre. l'honneur est donc sauf. De plus, je compte rapidement me lancer dans la peinture d'une armée impériale pour la guerre de Trente Ans, car j'ai reçu des figs Old Glory à Noël (merci chérie). Donc pas mal de peinture en perspective.

no, it's not my last post for 2011. what I mean is I finished the last element of my Carthaginian army, the general in chief. As for yesterday, it's been a bit rushed, so I'm not completely satisfied by the final result. Then again, after another closer look, I like how the linen armours turned out. I now have my camp to paint, and start another project.

Voilà! mon général en chef est maintenant terminé, il ne me reste plus qu' à peindre mon bagage et l'armée carthaginoise sera finie. J'avais lancé le projet il y un an tout de même. Bon, la peinture est à mon goût un peu bâclée, mais je vais commencer un nouveau projet pour la nouvelle année, alors, je dois être prêt.

I'm not alking about my Carthaginian army, which is about to be completed, but just about two bases I couldn't finish. I had started those two light horse units in march! But I never was very motivated to continue and finish them, always something else on the menu. so, at last I can say, they're finished. I had to rush the painting a bit, because I'm beginning to be fed up with Carthage at the moment, and there will be two, no three big projects for the coming year, but more on that later. Here they are:

Ca ne vous arrive pas, parfois, d'avoir dse trucs que vous n'arrivez pas à peindre? J'avais commencé ces zigues au mois de mars, et avec les différents projets en cours je n 'ai jamais eu la motivation suffisante pour les terminer. Bref, ils trainaient. Je les ai donc peints rapidement pour en finir une bonne fois pour toute, et entrevoir la fin de l'armée carthaginoise.

Strangely enough, the command figures had no shields in the blister, though I know they should have them. Bah, they don't look so bad anyway.

Voilà, noël est passé, et j'espère que vous en avez bien profité. Ce fut mon cas, et j'ai peindre un peu, pouvant ainsi terminer ce battlegroup de contarii. Bizarrement, il n'y avait pas de boucliers dans le blister de commandement alors qu'ils auraient dû être fournis. ce n'est pas grave, ils sont très bien comme ça.

Tomorow is a big day, so I enjoyed a few more quiet hours of painting before the festive night. I've started a battlegroup of contarii, that's unit in FOG. Well I don't mind nor care, but they look well on a table. Let's just hope my friend will have some success with them.

I really enjoyed painting them, but Corvus should really do something about their shields. it's a nightmare to make them stick to the arms...

Of Glue and Sand

Nothing fancy today, I finally decided to base my Carthaginian army, before everything goes out of control. So I took my PVA and some sand from my last trip to the Atlantic ocean, and after 30 minutes, voilà:

You can see on the upper right corner the last two units of light horse I have to finish painting.

Rien de bien spécial aujourd'hui. Afin d'éviter une totale démotivation devant la tâche, j'ai retroussé mes manches (pas trop il fait froid) j'ai pris ma colle et mon sable venu droit de mes vacances chez mes parents, et hop, 30 minutes plus tard, l'armée était sablée. Il ne me reste plus que queques éléments à peindre et socler, et l'armée sera terminée.

Finally! The Gauls are now all painted. Phew. They were a bit of work but I like the final result. I know, I know, I have to do the bases, but it shouldn't be long now ;)

I am now the proud owner of five trained warbands! Ah, Playing Hannibal in italy can be so rewarding. And mean too. To complete this project, I still have to paint two units of light horse and the camp, very cannaesque.

Allez hop, voici donc pour vous fidèles lecteurs ma dernière unité de Gaulois. Ce sont tous des vétérans qui ont déjà tâté (et massacré) du Romain, et qui en plus sont bien commandés. Que dire... Ben ils sont très très méchants, et j'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à les peindre. Il ne me reste plus que de la cavalerie légère et mon camp à peindre. Ceux qui me connaissent savent que j'ai une petite tendance morbide ^^

Living in the Uk might be a nightmare, sometines... Especially if you're a wargamer and you see lots of different games. So, after my trip to Warfare, and after watchng a couple of games, I was so weak I ordered a copy of FOG Renaissance and two companions books: War of religions and Trade and Treachery.

A few yeas ago, I played Renaissance with Renaissance POW. They were ok, but the Renaissance period is not very popular in France. That's a shame. Now, why FOG? First, I like the look of the battles, the attrition seems ok to me (fast and deadly), and you can't do whatever you want to. So, I'll have a go. And many people at the club already have armies, so I'll be able to play.

Oui, chers compatriotes, j'ai craqué! Moi qui pensais ne jamais jouer à FOG, j'ai été faible. En fait, j'ai toujours aimé les guerres de la Renaissance, mais il y a peu de joueurs en France et c'est bien dommage. Pendant un temps, je jouais à Renaissance POW, qui me convenait. Mais après avoir regardé des parties de FOG renaissance, je dois dire que j'ai été vraiment tenté: une bonne attrition un feu dangereux, des unités qui ne peuvent vraiment faire ce qu'elles veulent... Bref, je pense que je vais vraiment plonger. A bientôt pour la peinture d'une nouvelle armée...

Well, what can I say... When we start painting some Gauls, we just can't get enough, can we... So I'm still painting my huge pile of Gallic warbands. This time, I wanted something a bit more "gory". I cut the head from the Essex casualty, and just glued beside it a victorious Gaul.That should impress my opponent.

Comme dirait mon ami Boris, on n'a jamais assez de Gaulois. du coup je continue à vider mon stock de warbands... Les figs sont des Corvus Belli, avec un pauvre cadavre Essex. Je lui ai coupé la tête, et chance pour moi, une des figs Corvus avait cette pose victorieuse... Je n'ai pu résister. Voilà qui fera réfléchir plus d'un Romain.

The Carthaginian army is on its way to completion. Today, you'll see my second general, Mago. The mini is from Xyston, from their Spanish range. I liked it a lot and so it became one of the most famous leader of Hannibal.

Mon armée carthaginoise approche de sa fin. Bientôt terminée me direz-vous. C'est exact. Aussi j'ai peint Mago. C'est une fig Xyston de la référence espagnole. C'est une belle pièce et j'ai été motivée pour la peindre.

Mounted Gauls

After having painted some infantry, I wanted to add some mobile reserve. So I decided to paint some mounted Gallic cavalry, from Xyston. It's not premium painting quality, but that will do.

Après les fantassins gaulois, je voulais ajouter un peu de mobilité. J'ai donc opté pour une unité de cavaliers, qui peuvent opérer en réserve. Ce sont des Xyston. Et même si la peinture ne me satisfait pas totalement, j'en suis content, et ça me suffit.

A Warfare experience 2

After my last post about the joy about being in such a beautiful conv, full of sellers, let's talk about today's subject, the gaming tables. For those who don't know Warfare, it's really tournament oriented, as you can see:

There were many competitions, essentially FOG, but the flames of war tables looked good.

So, I must say I was a bit disappointed by the demo games. Maybe I'm too used to see such lovely tables from reports from Crisis or Salute. Anyway, here are the best shots I took. I'm soory not to show you more, but my camera had trouble adjusting. Damn...

First, the best table, in my opinion: jungle fight during WW2:

There were many others, but the pics are blurry. Sorry. One last table caught my eyes: Sage, at the Gripping Beast stand. Though not the best by far, I stayed there to watch a game (unable to play, too many people), and I understood the rules perfectly. Yay! One warband coming for 2012. Comment résumer Warfare? Excepté les vendeurs, c'est surtout une convention de tournoyeurs. Il y avait une de ces affluences aux tournois, c'était impressionnant. et FOG renaissance semble pas trop mal marcher là-bas. Les tables Flames of war étaient loin d'être dégueues, avec des idées à prendre pour faire de beaux scénarios. Et les démos dans tout ça? Ben regardez les quelques photos postées. On est très loin d'un Crisis ou d'un Salute, ou même de nos petites conventions françaises. La qualité n'est pas toujours là, mais on pouvait trouver quelques petites beautés, comme une grande table 28mm dans la jungle, avec combats entre Japonais et Hollandais. J' en ressors un peu déçu, je pensais voir mieux. Mais à 40minutes de chez moi, je ne vais pas faire la fine bouche, j'y ai passé du bon temps. Demain, la suite avec ce que j'ai acheté.

A new experience, Warfare

I know Warfare was last week-end, but I didn't really have the time to post. Anyway, as a French gamer, I always wondered what a wargame show could look like on this side of the pond. Well, after 26minutes in a train (I like British Rail btw), I arrived at Reading.

First shock for me, it's well indicated. I was quite early, so I sat and had a small breakfast. I just love British breakfasts...

When the bell struck 10AM, a whole new world appeared in front of me: shops by the dozens, gamers, demos... I must say I was impressed.

There you had enough stuff to start a long life full of projects...

Salut à tous amis francophones. Le week-end dernier avait lieu la convention Warfare à Reading, banlieue ouest de Londres. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les premières images, c'est du lourd, et oui j'ai kraké, j'en parlerai plus tard. Franchement, si on est un amateur de tournoi, c'est un incontournable. Et que dire des marchands... Je suis reparti avec une bonne dizaine de projets en tête, et avec la carte de visite de Nicolas Stratigos, redac chef de Vae Victis... Ben ouais, 2 Français à Reading. Franchement, ça m'a fait plaisir de le voir, et lui tout autant. on a beaucoup parlé wargames, des tendances en Angleterre, des projets avec les fabricants, mais là, je dis rien. Franchement, Nico, ce fut super sympa, et la prochaine que tu traverses le tunnel, on se fait un Burger King quand tu veux ;) A très bientôt pour la suite de mon petit voyage en banlieue.

71- an other smidge of Gauls

Tomorrow I'll be at Warfare, leaving home quite early, though I live near Paddington station. But today, I finished another unit of Gallic veteran infantry. The minis are fro Corvus belli, and I added, for once, a Gallic wounded. The shields were hand painted, and enhanced thanks to veni vedi vici decals.

Demain matin, je vais à Warfare assez tôt par le train. Gros avantage, je vis près de Paddington Statin, qui est la gare desservant Reading. Ca c'est de la chance, car je vaispourla première fois voir une véritable convention à l'anglaise. Par ailleurs, comme vous pouvez le voir, j'ai terminé une deuxième unité de vétérans gaulois. Les boucliers ont été améliorés grâce aux transferts veni vedi vici. Le résultat me plaît, et j'ai même mis, pour une fois, un blessé gaulois et non romain. Je suis taquin.

70- Sling-a-ling

Everything related to Google seems to be buggy at home, and it's been really annoying for the last ten days or so. Do you have such problems? Anyway, I finished yesterday two more bases of Balearic slingers from Xyston. I painted them quite fast because I'd like to start painting something else, and as a result, I'm not quite satisfied with them.

And today I'm following my 101st blog, cité en jeux . I was erading it from time to time, but never followed it. Strange, because I thought I did, and because the blogger, Stephane, is one of my blogger friend.

Je ne sais pas si c'est le cas chez vous, mais de mon côté, tout ce qui a un rapport avec Google plante, ou fonctionne de manière erratique depuis 10 jours, et, pour rester poli, c'est agaçant. M'enfin bon. Voici aujourd'hui deux bases de frondeurs des Baléares pour Art de la guerre, toujours de chez Xyston. Je les ai peintes rapidement et du coup, je ne suis pas trop satisfait du résultat. Mais c'est toujours ça de fait.

Et aujourd'hui, j'annonce que je suis 101 blogs, grâce à cité en jeux . Désolé Stéphane, je pensais que je te suivais, car je lis régulièrement, mais ce n'était pas le cas. Voilà la chose réparée.

69- Tapacenbal the lightning

Sorry for you all my anglo-saxon readers, but this time you won't be able to catch the play-on -words. Today I present you my first Carthaginian general called Tapacenbal. That's his name in our mediterranean campaign. Why "the lightning" you say? Well, easy enough, he's in charge of the cavalry, and he won many fights or delaying actions. He's one of the best.

Minis are from Corvus Belli, excepted for the casualty, from Essex.

Salut à tous! Voici devant le puissant, le magnificent Tapacenbal l'éclair! il s'agit d'un de mes meilleurs généraux pour Art de la guerre, car il est classé brillant. Pendant la campagne antique, il a remporté de nombreuses victoires et souvent bien ralenti l'adversaire. Son surnom d' "éclair" vient tout simplement de son génie dans le commandement de la cavalerie légère, capable de frapper n'importe où, n'importe quand. les figs sont des Corvus belli, à part le cadavre, qui vient de chez Essex.

Et grâce à davesgamingplace, je suis maintenant de manière active 100 blogs. Ca en fait de la lecture!

68- Carthaginian Veterans

I already had painted, a few months ago, my first unit of Hannibal's Veterans. Well, yesterday I finished my second one, with black shields. Those tough guys are from Xyston, with hand painted shields.

Indeed fellow readers. You can't have a Carthaginian army without a troup of Gallic mercenaries. Those are from Corvus Belli, and with shield transfers from Veni Vedi Vici. it's a mix from different references to create this charging warband effect.

Hello everyone. Now it's time for me to start painting my own army for a change ;) And I finished a few days ago, but didn't have time to take a proper picture, a new unit for my Carthaginian Army. This is a unit of heavy infantry, from the Campanian allies.

Because they were former Roman allies, they know their way of fighting. So they are rated as Impact foot. yum.

64- A so Roman Camp

This, for now, will be the end of the Roman posts, well at least for couple of weeks, I still have a lot to paint. Anyway, for Art de la guerre, you need a 8x4cm camp. So, Beeing free to do whatever I wanted to, with what I had at disposal, this is what I produced with two Baueda tents, a command figure and a blister of marching Romans from Corvus Belli.

Salut à tous. Ceci devrait être le dernier post sur des Romains, du moins pour 2-3 semaines, car j'en ai encore un paquet à peindre, mais c'est moins important. Pour Art de la guerre, il vous faut un bagage de 8x4cm. Et comme j'étais libre de faire ce que je voulais, avec ce que j'avais à disposition, voilà ce que Ludo a reçu avec 2 tentes Baueda, un fig de commandement et un blister de Romains en marche. un vrai régal à peindre.

Borus is the third general for Ludovic's army. Why sneaky? Well, he's leading the auxiliaries, and especially the scouts, always ready to spring an ambush right behind an unsuspecting ennemy.

Voici donc le 3e général de l'armée de Ludo, à savoir Borus le sournois. J'ai choisi ce nom tout simplement parce qu'il dirige les auxiliaires et les éclaireurs. A bon, entendeur, messieurs les vils Gaulois.

Here are the only pictures of the 79th Cameron highlanders I painted for my friend. I 'm disappointed because you won't see the pipers, and the officer on his white horse... Bah, anyway, time has passed, and I must say I was really pleased with the Old Glory miniatures, and the odd Warmodelling figures, from time to time. For example, the standard bearers and drummer are from Warmodelling. This is the last time I bother you with Napoleonics, at least for a while, and now I can go on painting my other projects, when I've finished the Romans...

Ce seront les seules phots des Ecossais du 79e Cameron Highlanders que vous verrez, hélas. J'ai vraiment apprécié peindre ces Old Glory, même sir les tartans ne sont pas évidents. Seuls les figs de commandement sont de chez Warmodelling. Maintenant, je vais pouvoir passer à autre chose, continuer mes autres projets de peinture, et en commencer d'autres.

61- Sausage eating British... the KGL

Small detour through the Napoleonic wars to show you the whole unit of the KGL for my friend JB. it's a shame I took pictures in a hurry, because I forgot to take pictures for the whole army, and you won't see neither Wellington nor Picton. Shame on me. Anyway, here are the galant German troops in his Majesty's service.

Petit détour par la Belgique en 1815, avec ces valeureux représentants allemands au service de l'Angleterre. Les figs Old Glory sont vraiment agréables à peindre, tout du moins ces références là. Malheureusement, je n'ai pas pu prendre des photos de toutes l'armée anglo-alliée, donc vous ne verrez ni Wellington, ni Picton, c'est fort regrettable.

When Cold becomes Hot...

A few days ago, I stumbled upon a used, but in a very good condition, copy of Cold War commander. The rules are sold out, so I consider myself lucky to get hold of one set.

I've always been interested by cold war potential conflicts, especially since I read one book... Red Storm rising, by Tom Clancy. Now out of date (the war is over), it is still very interesting, because of the starting point of the novel, an islamist attack in USSR, but I won't say where. Then you have a lot of chapters about air raids, night attacks, tank battles, navy battles... I really enjoyed the chapters about the war undersea. Full of action, only the end is disappointing.

Serais-je chanceux? J'ai réussi à mettre la main sur un exemplaire d'occasion de Cold War Commander, alors qu'il est maintenant épuisé. Les conflits de la guerre froide m'ont toujours plus ou moins tentés, et surtout depuis ma lecture de Red Storm rising, de Tom Clancy (Tempête rouge en Français). A partir d'une situation initiale malheureusement plausible (attentat islamiste en Union soviétique, le bouquin date d'avant 1991), la guerre froide devient chaude, très rapidement. On est facilement pris par le rythme de l'action, les batailles aériennes, sous-marines, terrestres, mais aussi spatiales, pour la quête du renseignement. Franchement un bon bouquin, mais vous pouvez zapper la fin un peu trop décevante.

60- A smidge of Auxiliaries (the last of them)

One thing for sure about the Romans, they really like using Auxiliaries. And my friend Ludovic is no exception. I had to paint 6 units of medium infantry for his army, and here is the last batch of them. To break the monotony, I've put, here and there, some auxiliaries at rest, waiting for the order to attack. it was a pleasure painting them, really fast indeed.

Voici la fin, c'est promis, des auxiliaires de l'armée de Ludo. En cela, son armée est historique, car il en a une floppée maintenant. Pour briser un peu la monotonie de l'ensemble, j'ai parsemé ici et là les plaquettes de figs au repos, en attente des ordres. Ces figs sont vraiment agréables à peindre, bien plus que les légionnaires.

59- Didius the infamous

For those who like reading comics (not theAmerican ones, the European ones) you should recognize this title. It's about the second Roman general for Ludovic, though the pictures are bit blurred (sorry, was in a rush at that time). The minis are from Corvus Belli. I really like the legionary in his coat, very lifelike.

Amis bédéphiles, vous devriez reconnaître ce titre. Tout ça pour vous présenter le second général de l'armée de Ludo, à base de figs Corvus Belli. Et désolé pour la qualité d'image, mais quand on est pressé... En tout cas, j'adore la référence de légionnaire en manteau, car très réaliste.

An epic Saga about to begin

This is a good title for this post, for two reasons. First, I've finally received my copy of Saga, plus a Viking starter set, and... the dice set! Yay! I think I'm more than lucky because they're now out of stock...

So, what is the other reason? Well, I had ordered them before leaving to London, but they were sent to my former address in France after my departure... So, my parents had to get them, and then send them back to me... pheww. Anyway, I've already erad the rules and I like them. Plus, Two of the guys in my club are actually painting Normans and Saxons.. So, maybe in a few months, you'll see games set in 1066 Britain. For your information, My warlord will be called: Einhar Ragnarson. Ok, that's an easy one ^^

Salut à tous. Comme vous avez pu le constater, j'ai reçu mon exemplaire de Saga, avec un starter Viking et les dés spéciaux. J'ai beaucoup de chance sachant qu'ils sont en rupture de stock. Le truc c'est que je les avais commandés alors que j'étais encore en France. Mes parents ont dû récupérer le paquet, et me le renvoyer ensuite. Ce n'est donc que maintenant que je peux en profiter. In my former blog, I had made a painting resolution: I had to publish 100 posts about painted minis. Well, we're almost at the end of the year, and, if I count each post about painted minis, I'm now at 57 posts published (58 with this one), so quite a long road ahead to keep my promise. Fortunately for me, I took some pictures of my painting sessions before leaving for London, so for the next few days, you'll see what I did, and, of course, what I painted once in London.

And today, you'll see the end of the Roman legionaries for my friend Ludovic... Well, at least the Romans for his Art de la guerre army. As usual, they're 15mm Corvus Belli miniatures. Next you'll see the generals and the camp.

En début d'année, j'avais pris la résolution de poster 100 posts à propos de figs peintes. J'en suis à 57, 58 avec celui d'aujourd'hui. J'ai donc du retard, surtout à cause du déménagement et de l'absence de connexion fiable, mais ça va s'arranger. J'avais pris quelques clichés avant mon départ, et je vais donc pouvoir maintenant en profiter. Dans un premier temps, il s'agira des Romains de mon pote Ludo, avec donc la fin de ses légionnaires pour Art de la guerre. A suivre, les généraux et le camp.

Well, After more than a month, I'm finally back on the net, thanks to, at last, a decent internet connection. We're slowly settling in the London life, and I must admit I really like this city. I managed to find a club 20 minutes from home, so, though I still don't have a job, everything seems to be rather well. Salut à tous. Me revoilà enfin sur le net, prêt à blogger de nouveau. Après un mois et demi, le temps me paraissait un peu long. Certes, je pouvais surfer un peu, mais pas laisser de commentaires, ni réellement partager mes idées, bref, un peu frustrant. La vie suit son cours, et même si je n'ai pas commencé à chercher du travail, j'ai de quoi m'occuper, entre ma fille, le ménage, les courses... J'ai toutefois pu trouver un club sympa à 20 minutes de chez moi, ce qui est parfait! Donc, attendez-vous à me revoir intervenir prochainement sur tous les forums et autres blogs!

The third legion

Well, tomorrow is the big step towards adventure! So, I'm a bit busy right now, and I won't talk too much. Anyway, after the auxiliaries, I'm back to the legionaires from Corvus Belli, and their f***** LBMS shields which won't fit correctly.

Demain, c'est le grand départ. Alors, avant de partir, de quitter notre chère république de plus en plus bananière, voici un nouvel élément de l'armée ADG romaine pour mon pote Ludovic. Comme toujours, ou presque, ce sont des Corvus, avec le grand retour de ces p**** de transferts LBMS qui ne s'ajustent pas correctement.

A very small part from the Roman army: the Numidian skirmishers. My friend and client wanted 2 more bases of javelin skirmishers for his army. Luckily, I had those from Xyston, and didn't really know what to do with them. So I kindly painted them for him:

Hi everyone. Only a few days left before the final departure for London. And I'm still painting like a madman as soon as I get some spare time. So, I managed to finished the last part of the cavalry, from Old Glory, as usual.

1st Life Guards (1)

I've almost finished the third division for my friend. This time, it's the last cavalry unit. And, as you must have guessed from the title, they're the Life Guards. The painting was fast and easy because of the black horses and the "basic" colours. No fancy dress like the !@#** hussars.

Je m'apprête à terminer la dernière unité de la troisième division de JBB, les Life Guards. Les figs d'Old Glory sont sympas et rapides à peindre. De plus, c'est une unité pas trop prise de tête, avec des chevaux noirs et un uniforme plutôt classique, qui n'a rien à voir avec les féminineries des hussards. franchement, les hussards, rien que des tafioles, na!

While painting the British units, I managed to squeeze some free time to paint some Romans for my other commission. The pics are a bit blurry, sorry... The minis are from Corvus Belli, and you' ll have the same opinion about this refs: great sculpts, but bad/old moulds.

Another base of generals for Grande Armee. The minis are a mix from Old Glory, Warmodelling and Essex. Ok, you can sometimes see some shine but I ran out of varnish (darn). They're supposed to represent the allied division in my client's army.

Deuxième plaquette de généraux pour Grande Armée. Les figs sont un mix d'Old Glory, Warmodelling et Essex. Cette plaquette est censée représenter les généraux de la division d'alliés de l'armée de JBB.

There! I've just finished the Guards. As you can see, the Old Glory packaging wasn't that great, with only two firing poses. So I managed, eventhough I didn' t respect the initial commission. anyway, I feel this scene looks better. The skirmishers are from the 95th rifles, painted a few months ago.

As you can see, one of the riflemen has just seen what's coming...

Et voilà, les Guards sont terminés. Comme Old Glory ne mettait que 2 poses dans son blister, j'ai préféré charger la plaquette à fond, avec les rifles du 95e peints quelques mois plus tôt. Il ne me reste donc plus que 3 unités et les généraux à peindre.

Now I'm back and I'm painting rather frenetically because time is passing by very fast, and I still have a lot to do. Anyway, here is the first rank of the 1st Guards at Waterloo. Drummers and foot officers are from Warmodelling. the rest is... from Old glory.

I know it's a bad play on words, but before leaving for London, I finished painting the Orange-Nassau regiment. I also had time to sand the base. I must say I was badly surprised by this ref from Old Glory. Though they say it represents Nassau troups, we don't have any info about the blister composition. And in fact, we don't how many flank companies minis we'll get. And to add another downside, they're not that easy to spot when unprimed. It's only when undercoated that I saw the most part of them were from the flank companies... Damn! Fortunately, a good paint job helped me hide the details... Now time to go to bed, may plane is at 9. AM.

Juste avant de partir pour Londres, j'ai eu le temps de terminer le régiment Orange-Nassau. Je dois dire que je suis déçu du packaging Old Glory, car impossible de savoir combien il y a de figs des compagnies du flanc. Et bien sûr, c'est très dur à deviner quand elles ne sont pas sous-couchées. Ce n'est qu'après le bombage qu'on voit l'erreur, et dans mon cas, la majorité des figs sont des compagnies du flanc... Heureusement qu'une bonne peinture peut tout cacher ^^
