The battle of Marshmallow Moor-1644 and 2nd clue!

The messenger finally arrived, breathless, and gave the official dispatch.
Le messager arriva essoufle, et tendit le courrier officiel.

- Well, gentlemen, it seems that after our wonderful humiliation against the Cornish, the Parliament has decided to send us North... Against the Scots. They think if we win two decisive battles, we might be through.
- Hmmm... Though it might be true, is it really wise? They're numerous, hairy and they stink! Were they not red-haired, I would think they're French! And besides, aren't they well commanded?
- Indeed they are my friend. And I'm afraid we'll have first to battle against lord Dave Mc Allen, and his rabble. I've heard he's pretty good.
-Dang.

- Bien, Messieurs, il semblerait qu'apres notre memorable humiliation contre l'armee de Cornouailles, le Parlement nous confie de quoi redorer notre blason.. en nous envoyant dans le Nord, contre les Ecossais. Ils estiment que si nous remportons deux victoires decisives, nous pouvons gagner.
- Hmmm, meme si cela est vrai, est-ce vraiment prudent? Ils sont nombreux, poilus et ils puent!  Heureusement qu'ils sont rouquins, sinon on penserait qu'ils sont Francais... Et de surcroit, ne sont-ils pas bien commandes?
- En effet mon cher. Et je crains d'avoir a vous informer que nous allons d'abord devoir affronter lord DAve Mc Allen et ses pouilleux. J'ai entendu dire qu'il etait plutot competent. 
- M....... 

And so started my third game in our renaissance comp. My Parlementarian army had to face the 1641 Covenanters: lots of rubbish troops, but numerous, and Dave Allen is a pretty good player. I needed a big win to hope going through to the second round.

For once, terrain was on my side, with a lot of enclosed fields right in the middle of the table. That gave me an idea:

Voici donc comment a commence ma troisieme partie du tournoi interne. Mes Parlementaires devaient affronter une armee Covenanter de 1641: plein de troupes pourries, mais nombreuses, et Dave est un bon joueur. Il me fallait une victoire decisive pour esperer entrevoir le 2e round.
Pour une fois, le terrain me fut favorable, avec un ensemble de champs clos en plein milieu de la table. Cela m'a donne une idee: 

I would attack on my left, supporting my center, well protected in the fields. The center included a huge unit of 8 bases of muskets, devastating. My right would ne lighter, with a few units, and some light artillery.

Dave deployed his army to try to block my attack, with lots of average troops on his right wing... And then I wondered... Strange. He only has the same number of units as I do... Right, he's attempting a flank attack, so it'll be a race against time.

And they were off! I moved as quickly as I could to position myself properly for an all-out attack: supported muskets on the center, cavalry on my left against some dragoons... Everything was more or less ready. DAve could only react to my movements. Good.

J'attaquerai sur ma gauche, en supportant, ancre sur les champs. Mon centre incluera une grosse unite de 8 tireurs, a la vollee devastatrice. Ma droite sera plus legere, avec seulement quelques unites et de l'artillerie legere.

Dave se deploya pour me contrer avec beaucoup de troupes sur sa droite. Et pendant son deploiement, je constatai qu'il avait autant de troupes que moi. Bon... Il va tenter une marche de flanc. Chic une course contre la montre.

Et on est parti! Je deplacais ;es troupes aussi vite que possible pour me positionner correctement en vue de delivrer le coup fatal: mes mousquetaires au centre, cavalerie a gauche contre quelques dragons. Tout etait plus ou moins en place. DAve ne pourrait que reagir a mes mouvements Bonnnn. 

An unpainted unit! Heresy! Burn them!

No one before us, ok , let's move.

I'll be honest with you. This battle was so tense I forgot to take as many pictures as I would have liked, but you can imagine what happened... No? Well, let me tell you then. My left wing went into contact, we exchanged a lot of fire, we even ordered a push of pikes. Oh yeah, that was truly beautiful... Erm... Yup, I was happy, because for many turns, Dave's flank attack refused to arrive. Each turn was a respite, during which I could try to inflict as many casualties as possible. or so I thought...

Je serai honnete avec vous, cette bataille fut si tendue que j'en ai oublie de prendre des photos. Bon, j'en ai suffisamment pour vous narrer l'histoire, mais quand meme. Mon aile gauche arriva au contact, et apres un echange de feux, on est meme alle jusqu'a ordonner la charge. Oh, quel plaisir! Pendant de nombreux tours, la marche de flanc de Dave refusa d'arriver. Chaque tour etait donc un repit pour moi, me permettant d'infliger un maximum de pertes...

Indeed his average pike and shot were simply plowing through my veterans, breaking one and seriously mowing another. Fortunately for you, the unpainted unit also disappeared... My goodness, things were looking pretty grimm. But what was happening in the center? Well... See for yourself:

Plus facile a dire qu'a faire, car ses troupes ordinaires etaient en train de massacrer mes veterans, une unite deroutant et la seconde etant dans un sale etat. Mon unite non peinte disparut elle aussi. Ok, la ca commence a chier dans le ventilo. Mais que se passe-t-il au centre?

Poof! Nothing could resist the mighty power of an 8-pack of shooters, supported by light artillery. Everything just disappeared in front of them, without so much as a sweat. So. To be clear, everything depended on the arrival of the flank attack, then? Yup. Did they arrive? NOPE! I had time to use a cavalry unit to charge a fragmented unit, and then, they routed. Even though I was in a bad shape on my left, it was more than enough for me to break Dave's army! Hurray! The curse is lifted!

Pouf! Rien ne pouvait resister a la puissance de mes mousquetaires, supportes par mon artillerie. Tout disparaissait en face d'eux. He he. Donc, pour etre clair, tout dependait de l'arrivee de la marche de flanc... Qui ne vint jamais! J'utilisai le temps gagne pour charger une unite fragmentee avec ma cavalerie, et elle derouta au contact. Meme si mon aile etait dans un sale etat, cela fut suffisant pour faire derouter l'armee de Dave. Hourrah! La malediction est levee.

Thanks to this game, I received a whooping 21-4 victory, meaning I only need now 17 points to go on the second round. But I 'll need to win against Jim first. Another Scottish army.

Grace a cette partie, j'ai gagne 21 points, ce qui signifie que je n'ai plus que 17 points a grapiller pour passer au 2e round. Il me faudra toutefois gagner contre Jim.

At last! French generals

At last, one project is now over. Those of you who follow Curt's painting challenge know I have now finished painting my Thirty Years War French army. I only needed to paint the generals, and now the circle is complete.

What you have here today is 4 generals, 3 of them from Old Glory, the fourth one from Testudo. Why Testudo? Well, I wanted a Prince of Conde to lead the troups to victory, that's why ;) Those who know about the period will surely point at the flags. I know, they're wrong. They're indeed infantry flags, not battle standards. But the truth is I wanted them to be easily distinguished  from the regular cavalry, that's it. Now, what to do... Start my new project, or finish my Cold war French first? Hmmmm. Decisions...

The Testudos are on the right

Enfin! Voila un projet termine! Ceux qui suivent mes peripeties sur le blog de Curt savent que je viens de terminer mon armee francaise guerre de Trente ans. Il ne me manquait que les generaux a peindre et c'est desormais chose faite. 3 d'entre eux proviennent de chez Old Glory, le dernier est un Testudo. Pourquoi Testudo? J'avais simplement besoin d'avoir Conde dans mes rangs, donc, hop.

Les puristes me reprocheront les drapeaux, qui ne correspondent pas. En effet, ce sont des drapeaux d'infanterie, et non des etendards de generaux. Le truc est que je voulais etre sur de pouvoir les identifier rapidement parmi les cavaliers. Donc, j'ai triche. Maintenant, une question se pose, que faire? Terminer mes Francais guerre froide, ou bien commencer mon projet antique....

New bits on the block

Foreword: First I've put a translation thingy on the right for those who don't read English nor French very well.
En francais: j'ai mis un traducteur sur la droite, et j'ai mis a jour mon rapport de bataille d'hier, avec la VF (veinards). Vous n'avez qu'a cliquer.

Now. The painting challenge is still underway, and I admit I won't be able to be in the top 10. I'll try to stay in the top 15 though. But to acheive this, I have to continue painting. So first of, I finished the Chinese general for my friend Chris, minis are from Museum.

Revenons au challenge de peinture. Je n'ai plus aucun espoir de terminer dans le top 10, tout au mieux esperer rester dans le top 15. Mais pour cela il me faut vraiment continuer a peindre. Donc, voici aujourd'hui le general chinois qui rejoindra ses petits copains dans la nouvelle armee de Chris. Les figs sont des Museum.

And then, I finished the wagon that will be part of the TYW camp. Once again, it's from Museum, but I added a Donnington one to make this scene a bit more lively. Next, the generals.

Puis, j'ai termine ce qui sera partie integrante de mon camp pour mon armee TYW: un chariot rempli de tonneaux, toujours de chez Museum. J'y ai ajoute une Donnington pour rendre la scene un chouia plus vivante. A suivre, les generaux.

 

Avec panache: Bussy-Rabutin

Almost there, almost there. Indeed I've finished painting my last unit! Hooray! Now, I only need to paint the generals and some bits for the camp, and then my army will be truly finished. Right. This infantry regiment is under the command of the count Roger de Rabutin, born in 1618. As many young nobles from this period, he fought his forst battle at 16 in Lorraine. Then, he fought under Conde at Rocroi, and Turenne in Germany. He also spent some time in prison for some dubious reasons (I think they were political, but sodomy is a better motive, don't you think?). Finally, he entered the prestigious Academie francaise in 1665.

The minis are from? From? Old Glory of course, and the flags from Flags of war.

J'y suis presque, j'y suis presque. Je viens de terminer la derniere unite de mon armee francaise! Il ne me reste plus qu'a peindre les generaux, ainsi que 2-3 trucs pour le camp, et hop, projet termine, bonsoir tout le monde, on passe a autre chose ;)

Ce regiment etait sous les ordres du comte Roger de Rabutin, ne en  1618. Comme beaucoup de jeunes gens de sa condition, il participa a sa premiere bataille a 16 ans, en Lorraine.Par la suite, il combattit sous les ordres de COnde a Rocroi et de Turenne en Allemagne. Bref, un bon CV militaire. Cela ne l'a pas empeche de faire un tour en prison pour sodomie. Mouais, ca pue les raisons politiques, c'est un peu trop facile. Il termina sa carriere en etant elu a la prestigieuse Academie francaise en 1665. Beau parcours moi je dis.

Boom-Boom-Boommmm

I'm on my way to complete the first project I had intented to do: my French Thirty years war army: I only need to paint one unit, the generals and the camp and it will be over ( one after having received the minis, erm). But before that, my army needs some real heavy support. So I've painted some guns and crewmen: they're a mix from Old Glory, Donington and Museum minis. The three small ones are regimental guns, providing some much needed help for my infantry units, simply because in FOG-R, the French don't shoot very well at close range. Indeed they prefer charging ( ah le panache...)

Bon, je me rapproche de la fin de mon projet guerre de trente ans ( un an apres avoir recu les figs, c'est pas mal). Il ne me reste plus qu'une unité, les généraux et le camp. En attendant, voici du support lourd pour mes gars qui en auront bien besoin. Nous avons un mélange de Museum, Donnington et Old Glory. Les petits calbres sont des canons de bataillons qui ajoutent du peps à mes régiments, qui en ont besoin, car à FOG-R, les Francais ne tirent pas bien à courte portée, préférant la charge (on n'est pas Francais pour rien).

Frack me! Oh, and more minis

Right, let's start with a rant. First, my external hard-drive is dead, no more power. Grrr. I had put there all the papers I had scanned for the past 4 years... and lots of pics and my lessons. Fortunately, my wife had a back-up for the papers, so nothing important is lost, but then. And a few hours ago, my desktop's Windows decided not to start, again, for the third time in less than a year... I'm currently using my wife's old laptop...I think it's because of a conflict between HP softwares and windows, but, this time, I should reboot everything, less than a month after having done so. FRACKKKKKKKKKKKKK. So, tomorrow morning, back to John Lewis to know what's wrong. I hope to get a refund and buy something else.

Anyway, enough of rant, we're here to talk about minis, right? Still painting my TYW army, I've now done the Schaumburg infantry regiment. Another Saxon unit, with very nice flags. The problem is, they switched sides after the peace of Prague of 1635, and subsequently should'nt fight alongside the French.... Bah, who cares anyway.

Bon, je vais finir par me facher sévère avec l'informatique. Il y a peu, mon disque dur externe a lâché, l'alim ayant grillé... Des années de paperasses, notamment des copies de papiers importants, ont disparu... Sans oublier tous mes cours et des images.... Heureusement, tout l'administratif est sur un second DD, celui de ma femme. Fait chier quand meme. Et pour en rajouter une couche, Windows sur mon PC HP refuse tout simplement de démarrer... Pour la troisième fois en moins d'un an. La seule solution, reformater... Ca commence a bien faire, surtout que le dernier formatage remonte à moins d'un mois... Je subodore une incompatibilite logiciele entre les softwares HP et Windows, mais, trop c'est trop. Demain, je retourne en boutique pour verifier si tout va bien, et si possible negocier un refund pour prendre une autre marque....Fait chier l'informatique... Je tape ce post sur le vieux portable de ma femme.

Bref, à part ça, mon armée française approche de sa conclusion. Voici aujourd'hui le régiment saxon Schaumburg. Je l'ai choisi uniquement pour la beauté des drapeaux, car historiquement je ne devrais pas l'utiliser. En effet, bien que Saxon, ce régiment est passé du côté impérial après la paix de Prague de 1635, se retrouvant ainsi ennemi de la France. Mais bon, pour le moment, j'en n'ai rien à foutre! Chui vener' et pis c'est tout, bordel.

Loesers, losers?

Behind this poor play on words there is a real fightig unit druing the Thirty Years war, the Loeser infantry regiment. As you can guess from the name, they weren't French but Saxon. Initially, though the duke of Saxony (protestant) was pro-imperialist, the damages caused by the catholics in his territories lead him to join with Gustavus Adolphus. But, after the Swedish defeat at Nordlingen in 1634, he switched sides and joined the imperialist camp. 

Pour ceux qui connaissent deux -trois mots d'anglais, j'ai fait un jeu de mots pourri. Mais derriere cet effort lamentable de ma part se cache une veritable unite d'infanterie de la guerre de Trente ans. En effet, il s'agit d'un regiment saxon. A l'origine, le duc de Saxe, bien que protestant, etait pro-imperialist. Cependant, apres les degats subis sur son sol par les armees catholiques en vadrouille, choisit le camp de Gustave Adolphe. Cependant, apres la defaite suedoise de Nordlingen en 1634, il changea de camp et rejoignit le camp imperialiste.

 This unit is a full 6 bases of musketeers, and represent the Loeser infantry regiment for my French army. Technically and historically it's incorrect, but I liked the flags, which I downloaded from Grimsby wargames society. This unit was created in 1631 and fought valiantly, so I can rate them as "superior". They're also equipped with a regimental gun from Museum miniatures. This unit is a tough nut to crack, trust me ;)

Vous avez ici un regiment a 6 bases de mousquetaires, le regiment Loeser, qui sera pour l'occasion au service de mes Francais. Certes, techniquement et historiquement c'est totalement incorrect, mais j'aimais bien les drapeaux que j'ai recupere sur le site de Grimsby wargames society. Ce regiment fut cree en 1631 et combattit vaillament. Je la'i donc classe "superieur", et l'ai dote d'un canon de bataillon, issu de chez Museum miniatures. Ces gars sont des durs a cuire, croyz-moi ;) 

Nettancourt

Hi everyone. It's been a few days since my last post. To be honest, I had completely forgotten to write a post about my new French unit, Nettancourt infantry regiment, though I had sent the pics to Curt for the painting competition. According to my sources, the unit was raised in the 1630's, fought first in Italy, and then in Germany within Turenne's army. They fought at the battle of Zusmarschausen in 1648.

Then again, minis are from Old Glory, and flags from Flags of war.

Bonnnn. Cela fait quelques jours que je n'avais rien poste. Je dois bien avouer que javais completement oublie d'ecrire un petit billet sur ma nouvelle unite francaise, le regiment de Nettancourt. D'apres mes sources, il aurait ete leve dans les annees 1630, aurait d'abord combattu en Italie, puis en Allemagne, ou il fut present sur les champs de bataille dans ls rangs de l'armee de Turenne en 1648. Il combattit notamment a Zusmarschausen (a vos souhaits). 

Comme d'habitude, les figs sont des Old Glory et les drapeaux proviennent de chez Flags of War.

Turenne, here we come!

A few days ago, I submitted my 4th entry to Curt's painting challenge, the Turenne infantry Regiment. As you coud expect from its name, yes, the famous Turenne raised this unit in 1635. But according to my sources, this unit didn't fight in Germany until after Rocroi, so technically I shouldn't use it in my army, but then, I loved the flag, so I kept it. As usual, the minis are from Old Glory, and the flags from Flags of war. Next, well, another French regiment, of course.

Il ya quelques jours, j'ai envoye ma quatieme unite complete pour le challenge de Curt, le regiment d'infanterie Turenne. Comme vous pouvez vous en douter, il s'agit bien du fameux Turenne qui leva ce regiment en 1635. Cependant, d'apres mes sources, et contrairement au reste des mes unites, ce regiment ne participa aux operations en Allemagne qu'apres Rocroi, ce qui ne correspond pas au theme de mon armee, mais je ne pouvais resister au drapeau. Comme d'habitude, les figs proviennent de chez Old Glory, et les drapeaux de Flags of war. A suivre, un autre regiment d'infanterie.

For St Andrew and King Louis!

When the smoke finally cleared away, the men breathed in relief. The imperials were routing; they had prevailed. "For St Andrew and King Louis!" shouted the officers. Another victory brilliant success would be added to the record of the regiment. The French will be pleased, no doubt about that.

As you might have guessed, what you'll see today is a Scottish regiment under French service during the Thirty years war. Indeed, the French army tended to recruit Scots since the Middle-Ages, renowned for their quality. And when they purchased the Swedish army in 1635, the veterans were put to good use. 

Lorsque la fumme finit par se dissiper, les hommes se detendirent, Les imperiaux etaient en deroute. Ils avaient vaincu, a nouveau. "Pour St Andrew et le roi Louis!" lancerent les officiers. Encore un brillant fait d'armes a ajouter dans les choriniques du regiment. Les Francais seraient fiers d'eux, a n'en pas douter.

Comme vous pouvez vous en douter, ce qui suit est un regiment ecossais au service de l'armee francaise durant la guerre de Trente ans. Les Francais avaient depuis longue date l'habitude recruter des Ecossais, reconnaissant leur valeur martiale. De plus, lorsqu'ils recupererent les restes de l'armee suedoise en 1635, les veterans furent utilises a bon escient.

So, these are Scots for my French army, and I decided to rate them as "superior", to emphasize their veteran status. As usual, minis are from Old Glory, and the flags form Flags of war. For the record, the first time I played them a couple of months ago, they were unpainted, but managed to rout a cuirassier BG and an elite Spanish tercio. Good work lads!

Voici donc ces fameux Ecossais. Je les ai classes "superieurs" pour refleter leur statut de veterans. LEs figs sont des Old Glory, et les drapeaux viennent de Flags of war. La premiere fois que je les ai joues, alors qu'ils etaient non peints, ils reussirent a  faire derouter un regiment de cuirassiers et un tercio elite espagnol. Bon boulot les gars!

D-Day minus 1, getting ready

Between my teaching lessons and my studies in web design (my wife now thinks I'm a complete geek), I managed to finish painting another unit for my TYW army. Don't be disappointed, it's just a warm-up, a lot of minis have been prepped, and I'm ready to rock.

Anyway, today what you can see is the Turenne Cavalry regiment, created by the soon-to-be famous Turenne, during the operations on the Rhine Valley. The minis are from Testudo, and sadly this lot was worse than the previous one. One horseman was completely unusable, and to be complete, I added a dead footman from Old Glory. It is really sad to have such poor moulds, because the minis look really lively, and menacing.

Plus que quelques heures avant le lancement officiel du concours de peinture. Je m'echauffe tranquillement en vous presentant une nouvelle unite de mon armee francaise. Je prends mon temps pour le moment, car je suis occupe, entre mes cours particuliers et mes etudes de web design ( je suis desormais l'archetype du geek selon ma femme). Il s'agit du regiment de cavalerie de Turenne, oui-oui, celui qui va devenir super celebre quelques annees plus tard, qui operait dans la vallee du Rhin. Les figs sont des Testudo, et la j'ai ete encore plus decu que la derniere fois. En effet, un des cavaliers etait tout simplement inutilisable, et j'ai compense en mettant un mort Old Glory ;) C'est vraiment dommage, car les figs sont vraiment belles. Enfin bon.

I am number 38, and more cavalry

Curt's painting competition will start in a few days, and I'm slowly but surely warming up. He decided to ask us for some points objectives. Right, this is a tricky one. Let's first have a look at the scoring system:

6mm foot figure = 1 point
6mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 2 pts
6mm vehicle = 3 pts

15mm foot figure = 2 pts
15mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 4 pts
15mm vehicle = 6 pts

20mm foot figure = 4 pts
20mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 8 pts
20mm vehicle = 12 pts

28mm foot figure = 5 pts
28mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 10 pts
28mm vehicle = 15 pts

54mm foot figure = 10 pts
54mm mounted figures, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 20 pts
54mm vehicle, limber, etc. = 30 pts

So, to sum it up:
- if I want to finish my TYW army, I should paint probably around 400points.
- next, my medieval additional units should amount to around 200 points.
- I also have to finish my French modern army in 6mm, maybe 100 points.
- I'd like to paint some more Vikings : between 40 and 100 points
- then if I'm productive, I'll start my Ancients army, maybe 200 points if I'm lucky.
- And of course, at least one Ronin ;)

So, I might be able to achieve a reasonable score of 1000 points, not bad I think.

Meanwhile, I finished basing a new French cavalry unit for my Thirty Years War project. The minis are from Testudo, and to be honest with, I don't like them. Don't get me wrong, they paint well, but there were lots of mould problems (flash and missing parts). Sadly, I have two more units from them... I prefer the Old Glory ones. Ah well.

Si j'en crois le blog de Curt, je suis le numero 38 sur sa liste. Il nous demande de publier un objectif a atteindre, et d'apres le systeme de points et ma liste ci-dessus, vous voyez que je vais essayer d'atteindre les 1000 points. Cela reste ambitieux, attention, surtout que je commence a avoir du travail en temps que web develloper amateur. Enfin passons.

Vous pouvez egalement voir que je viens de terminer une nouvelle unite de cavalerie francaise pour mon projet Guerre de trente ans. Ce sont des Testudo, et franchement je ne les aime pas. Elles sont certes agreables a peindre, cependant, que de problemes de moules! Entre le flash et les parties manquantes... je prefere de loin les cavaliers Old Glory.

Bon, c'est pas tout ca, je me motive pour le concours de peinture. Zoum!

More dragoons on the way

Right. Those guys were more or less for some time now. But they weren't based, so they weren't shown. Those minis from Old Glory, except the mounted riders, were, as always, a pleasure to paint. Though the French can only have 4 bases of dragoons, they can have an ally with 4 more bases. And yes, dragoons can be very useful. I chose to paint them in red, simply because I intend to use them for the club FOG-Renaissance competition, set during the English Civil War. And btw, I've already won my first game, but sadly you won't have any batrep, I forgot my camera. I was a game between my 1644 Parlementarian against Chris Covenanter Scots...

Smoke on the battlefield... tin, tin tinnn, tin tin tintin

Ces lascars etaient peints depuis un moment, mais ils n'avaient pas ete socles, donc hors de question de  les montrer. C'est maintenant chose faite, et ces Old Glory (sauf les deux cavaliers Museum) sont toujours aussi plaisants a peindre. Les Francais ne peuvent avoir que 4 socles de dragons, mais en prenant un allie, ils peuvent en avoir 4 autres. Et comme les dragons sont toujorus utiles ;) Je les ai peints cette fois en rouge, pour montrer leur origine differente, et pour pouvoir les utiliser tranquillement pour notre tournoi interne de FOG-Renaissance, dont le theme est la guerre civile anglaise. A ce propos, j'ai gagne mon premier match contre les Covenanter de Chris, mais vous n'aurez helas pas droit a un compte-rendu, car j'avais oublie mon APN...
